Hurricane Sandy and New Media

For this assignment I wanted to really test how powerful is the new media. After Hurricane Sandy New York suffered a great loss of homes and personal property. Some people lost everything.... When I tried to researching information for volunteering it was extremely difficult , I was surprised by how many questions I had to answer in order to sign up to volunteer. I was able to find a couple of good websites and encouraged all of my Facebook and Twitter friends to get together and help out with what ever they could. I got 10-15 responses , which I was happy about, what i didn't realize was the exposure of hurricane aftermath I provided. I had many people call me later on asking how they can help and I even saw people who are on my friend's list show up at the shelter to donate. So when you think that you are not being heard by many people because you are not receiving a lot of responses back , do not be disappointed, because once the message becomes public, everyone ( in this case my friends) has access to the information provided, and you never know how they can use it. Below is the small video that I created the week after Hurricane Sandy.

  1. That is great of you for using new media to help out for Hurricane Sandy. I too through my family's bakeshop used some social network to gather clothing and canned foods and it worked as a charm. We received an overwhelming response that our bakery's kitchen got full of products which was great for the victims. So in conclusion, even though you think it's a small marketing scheme you did. It can ring big bells and people will see it.

  2. Finally, Facebook and social media have come to good use! I was able to assist a few of my High School friends in Rockaway simply because they asked for it online. I was so thrilled to have been able to use my primary method of socializing for a good cause. A few friends and myself were also able to provide specific donations for areas. I constantly checked a consignment group on Facebook (where women usually sell high end shoes and bags) to find out what items were needed in Seagate, Sheepshead Bay, Staten Island, and Brighton Beach. It was so nice to see women and girls who you thought were superficial actually lending a hand (and tons of clothing donations) to all of our neighbors who needed it. I can't think of what method people would have used in the past before this?

  4. It is a great advancement in communication to be able to connect folks in need with folks that provide services via social networking - In the instance of Hurricane Sandy, there were many folks wanting to help but not sure where to go and what to do, but just like you showed the great long lines at gas stations and making donations, places like Facebook and Twitter really became social hubs that collected data and redistributed it to the masses.

We were without power, but when I had access to my Facebook through my cell phone (charged in my car), I would try and catch-up with the latest news. What I realized also, is what you realized, so many folks had been exposed to the devastation and wanted to know how they could get involved and I was able to connect folks to websites.

We have come a long way since the days of [phone] landlines and newspapers, radio and local news channels to get the latest news updates!
